Staying focused

When your mind is constantly stressed or pre-occupied, it is hard to stay focused. It seems us humans spend a lot of time thinking about what happened in the past, worry about what might happen in the future, or may just never happen at all.

Our mind wanders, our thoughts race, and if we are not on the 'watch out', we unconsciously attach emotions to scenarios played out solely in our mind. This appears to be our brain’s default mode of operation, and quite honestly, it is exhausting and in the long run unsustainable.

As a result, it does not really come as a surprise that we are feeling stressed and low at times. At night, you lie awake with a wired mind and an exhausted body.

Proverb

Scientists discovered that our capacity to breathe has changed through the course of human evolution. We now know that how we breathe has notably worsened since the dawn of the Industrial Age. According to the scientists, 90% of us are breathing incorrectly. Dysfunctional breathing, like breathing through your mouth or breathing using your upper chest can either cause or aggrevate a list of chronic diseases. (See: Breath, the new science of a lost art by James Nestor)

On a positive note, some of these researchers were also showing that many of our modern illnesses such as asthma, anxiety, ADHD, sleep apnea, psoriasis, PTSD can either be reduced or reversed by coming back to how we are meant to be breathing. The Bohr Effect taught us that less volume air facilitates better oxygenation of the blood. The optimum breathing rate at rest is about 5.5 breaths per minute – 5.5 seconds inhaling and 5.5 seconds exhaling.
